| My inspiration for the work came from my hectic and busy schedule as a high school student. Unconsciously, we are all trying to stay calm and work through subjects but we cannot feel true peace of mind, if we have never been agitated or angry. To fully understand and experience a positive aspect of life, you must first have knowledge of it’s opposite. Otherwise, you will never be truly at peace. This work was created using rice paper, brushes and ink. |

| I originally discovered this phrase, which is quite a common saying in Japan, while searching for an education related Buddhist saying for a graduating piece. I heard the phrase was often used in context with school and other challenges and was inspired to use it in a calligraphy piece, as I felt it was relatable to my school life. I believe it is important to always remember and carry out one’s original intention, especially for me in my studying of Japanese, to remember how I wished to further my knowledge of Japanese culture and must strive to fulfil it. Writing this piece, I think is an embodiment of my intentions. This piece was done in traditional Japanese calligraphy style on rice paper, using a brush and ink made from an ink stone. After numerous practices, this is my final copy of my work. |
